Didn’t see this coming
The original version by Abel Ferrara, while certainly flawed, grabbed critics’ attention, even with an NC-17 rating. Those who saw it generally approved of it — or at least couldn’t forget it — and it was instrumental (along with Reservoir Dogs) to Harvey Keitel’s resurgence back into credible films.
Is a remake by Herzog and Cage a good thing? I can’t decide. My hunch is HELL NO.
