+1 Lists – Episodes 23-30

Back to Cinecast/Filmspotting Top Five Plus One lists…

Cinecast #23/24: Antiheroes

Adam Sam
1. Michael Corleone, The Godfather Michael Corleone, The Godfather
2. Jake Gittes, Chinatown R.P. McMurphy, One/Cuckoo’s Nest
3. Jake LeMotta, Raging Bull Jake LaMotta, Raging Bull
4. Luke, Cool Hand Luke Suzanne Stone, To Die For
5. Henry Hill, GoodFellas William Munny, Unforgiven

Me: Wow, as much as I love Sam’s choice of To Die For, I’m truly surprised they both overlooked Alex DeLarge of A Clockwork Orange. No offense to Kubrick, but Malcolm McDowell’s performance truly makes the film memorable. How you are drawn in by him despite your revulsion toward his actions is due in large part to his mastery.

Cinecast #25: Worst Movies of the Year So Far (2005)

Adam Sam
1. The Interpreter Sin City
2. Be Cool The Island
3. The Ring Two Fantastic Four
4. Fever Pitch Star Wars: Episode III
5. The Longest Yard The Interpreter

Me: 2005 was apparently a pretty awful year for movies. Because the guys recorded this show in August, they weren’t able to experience the crapulence that is Dirty Love or Aeon Flux. So for that reason, it’s an easy choice for Uwe Boll’s Alone in the Dark. I’m not quite sure what I watched, but I can’t shake the image of Tara Reid cast as an anthropologist.

Cinecast #26: Movies of the Year So Far (2005)

Adam Sam
1. Hustle and Flow Hustle and Flow
2. Sin City Last Days
3. Star Wars: Episode III Me and You and Everyone We Know
4. Cinderella Man Cinderella Man
5. Mysterious Skin The Beat that My Heart Skipped

Me: If IMDB is to be believed, my choice was released the same day that this podcast was – 8/5/05. Granted it was a limited release, but I’m going to say it counts. I’m choosing Phil Morrison’s Junebug, which feels just like going home.

Cinecast #27: Best Performances of the Year So Far (2005)

Passing on this list, because it’s too many top fives, and too much work to go back and figure out what performances in 2005 were released before August. For the record, here are Adam and Sam’s picks.

Adam Sam
Supp. Actor: Paul Giammati, Cinderella Man Paul Giammati, Cinderella Man
Supp. Actress: Renee Zellweger, Cinderella Man Taraji Henson, Hustle & Flow
Actor: Terrence Howard, Hustle & Flow Terrence Howard, Hustle & Flow
Actress: Jennifer Connolly, Dark Water Radha Mitchell, Melinda and Melinda

Cinecast #28: Movies about Marriage

Adam Sam
1. Scenes From a Marriage Husbands & Wives
2. A Woman Under the Influence Faces
3. Raising Arizona The Secret Lives of Dentists
4. Husbands & Wives In America
5. Kramer vs. Kramer The Ice Storm

Me: Adam’s Rib. Hepburn and Tracy play married lawyers on opposite sides of an attempted murder case.

Cinecast #29/30: Revenge Movies (combined Top 5)

1. Kill Bill
2. Memento
3. The Limey
4. In the Bedroom
5. The Warriors (AK)/Heavenly Creatures (SH)

Me: It’s a pretty uninspired choice, but I’ll go with Oldboy.
